Dalston Children’s Festival 2016

On Saturday 28th May, CHUG joined hands with a group of local charities to play a part in the Dalston Children’s Festival.
On a gloriously sunny day, we staged narrow boat trips, fishing, and canoeing, along with the customary CHUG tea and wholesome home baked cakes.
The big idea is that local families and children will be inspired to take part in the year-long activities on offer at our neighbours, Laburnum Boat Club, which does such a great job of helping local kids have fun making the most of the Regents Canal while teaching them to be safe around water.

CHUG Grants

Do you live, work or study near Hackney’s canals? Do you have a project to do with the canal or its wildlife—or an idea for one—that needs financial support?

CHUG is looking for local projects to support with grants of up to £2,000. These might be smaller projects that require support in the region of £200 to £500, or major projects at the higher end of the scale.

CHUG is particularly interested in:

  • • projects that promote the use and enjoyment of the canals in Hackney
  • • projects that support the canal’s wildlife and greenery, and enable it to thrive
  • • creative, intelligent and well-organised projects for all ages
  • • projects that are collaborative in approach
  • • education projects
Applications are welcome from all those who live, work or study in Hackney – including local community groups, schools, individuals or groups of individuals.

CHUG will make the securing and management of grants as simple and straightforward as possible; however, there are certain requirements:

  • • projects must be completed not more than 12 months from the date of the award
  • • funding milestones will be set on a case-by-case basis according to the nature and requirements of the project, with a percentage of the grant to be given at the outset, a percentage on completion and agreed regular amounts to be paid through the project
  • • progress will be reviewed at regular intervals throughout the project by two or more members of CHUG
  • • written proof of the use of funds will be required, in the form of receipts, reports from the organiser/s or other as requested by CHUG

How to apply for a grant.

There is no deadline for applications, which will be assessed in the order in which they are received.

There is no set format for applications, though each must present the following:

  • • name of project
  • • brief description: What is it and how would it work?
  • • what is it about the project that excites you?
  • • how would it impact on the canal and who would benefit most from the project?
  • • what is the life of the project? How long would the results last?
  • • any imagery that would help illustrate the project and bring it to life for CHUG?
  • • outline budget
  • • why should CHUG fund the project?
  • • would CHUG be the only funder; if not, who else would support the project? (CHUG would not want to be associated with co-funders that clashed with its objectives and ethos.)
All CHUG-funded projects would be used by CHUG to promote its own work on Hackney’s canals.

For further information about the grants programme, or for guidance in making an application, please email info@yb8.dc8.mytemp.website.

We look forward to hearing from you!

CHUG and SkyWay Community Garden

In 2015 CHUG met with landscape designer Peter Beardsley, who had been commissioned by CRT to work with local hackney charity SkyWay, to regenerate an area of Haggerston Canal and transform this into a community garden.  SkyWay supports at-risk young people in Hackney aged between 8-25 years old, to achieve goals, realise their potential and contribute positively to their community.

CHUG recognised that this was a project worthy of some continued support, as well as being a great opportunity to kick start further community gardening projects along the Haggerston stretch of Regents Canal.  So we applied for a Hackney Community Chest Award for £1,000 to enable us to build and equip a garden tool shed within the SkyWay Garden for community groups to be able to easily access tools and garden safely along the towpath. And hurrah!  We were successful!

In December 2015 as part of the CHUG annual Christmas Fair, a CHUG team, Peter Beardsley, SkyWay, and members of the local community set sail down the canal on Santa’s Boat Cruise armed with fruit trees (apples & quince) and three sacks of Narcissus ‘Rippling Water’, which we planted along the towpath close to the Skyway Garden.

Since then we have been busy building the community tool shed and equipping it with the necessary tools and equipment.  Huge thanks to our neighbours at Travis Perkins, Kingsland Road, who donated a wheelbarrow and a number of other tools to the project.

The next stage of the plan is to establish and submerge native aquatic plant beds in the canal. And of course we are preparing for Spring/Summer planting!

The next community gardening activity day is likely to be held in May.  Please keep an eye out here for future dates or, if you are keen to learn more about how to get involved or have your own ideas to contribute then please email info@yb8.dc8.mytemp.website.
